In the forthcoming A Companion Guide Book to A Romance Map of the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York, historians and Finger Lakes natives Richard Vang and Michael Schmidt will explore the history and legends of this fabled region through the unique and interesting details of the classic illustrated map. Long famous for its farms and wineries, the Finger Lakes is also home to the sometimes forgotten story of historical firsts, amazing facts, and urban legends. Intrigued and inspired by the sparse details presented on the map, the authors have investigated firsthand this history further, bringing the reader along with them on a tour of the Finger Lakes that is not your standard travel guide. The guide book is designed to be taken alone on the road, or used by the armchair traveler as a study companion to the map.
Major themes will present the story of the Finger Lakes, from the time of the Haudenosaunee and early explorers, through the Revolutionary War, and on into the rise of the Empire State as an economic and political power. Transportation, inventions, religion, science, agriculture, the arts and entertainment are all brought together in a panorama of New York's history -- with some myths and legends exposed along the way. Illustrated with both original and historical photos related to the illustrations on the map, the guide book tells the reader what there is to see and do today, and includes detailed geographical locations, an index, a bibliography, related web site information, and sample travel itineraries. This handy guide is perfect for Finger Lakes tourists, middle and high school students, teachers, historical societies and just about anyone interested in the history of the Finger Lakes region.
